Our Philosophy:  Teaching chords is the #1 focus of Keyed Up Piano because chords are what give you the freedom to play music without having to read it.  There is no denying this fact; knowing chords is a prerequisite to playing by ear.  All advanced pianists know their chords, and the sooner you learn them, the sooner you will reach that higher level of playing and knowledge over the instrument that you hope for.

Why learn chords?  Chords give you freedom to play anything you want without having to read music.  Learning chords greatly improves your sight-reading skills and provides the means to "play by ear". In direct competition with standard lessons, chord based piano lessons teach you to understand the piano to play it without reading music.  You play songs right away and understand everything you're doing; unlike standard lessons that teach you to follow music blindly without understanding.  Chords provide structure to build on and much like the guitar is a chordal instrument, the piano can be learned the exact same way.  Learn your chords and you'll be able to play anything.

Our Mission:  Teaching chords and independence is Keyed Up Piano's specialty and mission.  Our flagship course, 24 Chords in 10 Lessons is a complete --start-to-finish-- regimented system to learn chords quickly.  It includes all relevant aspects of music theory, reading and counting, and doesn't shortchange your musical training whatsoever compared to taking standard lessons.

Getting Started

This is an "Advanced Beginner's Guide" and online piano course with videos that take you to, and then "beyond the basics" of some of the most important concepts in music.

You learn to identify the keyboard and how to read music on the staff, but it's more than just 101 material; LOTS MORE. It teaches insights into simplicity and establishes a knowledge-base that sets the foundation for later training.  All books are downloadable.

Four Moves Away From Playing By Ear

Could it be that simple?  Well there's a little more to it than that, but these four moves are the only ones needed to transition between chords.  That's a good place to start, and it's helpful for you to be aware of these moves from the very beginning.  You learn to make these moves naturally  in The Easy Key of C, and apply them the same for all other keys as you progress.

The Easy Key of C

If you have any doubts about how to get started learning chords and playing by ear, this course is ground zero.  Learn three fingering positions to play Six chords of C and you'll find yourself in the driver's seat nearly overnight (but you still need to learn how to drive).

Motivation is a big part of keeping going and C makes learning a lot of fun.  The most popular key there is, it's a comfortable range for singing and playing by ear.

No other key is as easy to understand or play than the Easy Key of C.  If you understand it in C, then you understand it in all keys.
